How much GPU memory an open model needs.
An open model needs about half a gigabyte of GPU memory per billion parameters at 4-bit, one at 8-bit and two at 16-bit, for its weights alone: DeepSeek V4 Pro's 1.6 trillion parameters take about 800 GB at 4-bit.
Context and serving memory come on top of the weights, so plan for more than the weights alone.

Weights only, in decimal gigabytes, from each model's published total parameter count. The last column is the smallest Wick whose GPU memory holds the 4-bit weights.

The arithmetic
Weight memory is parameters times bits per weight, divided by eight. A 1-trillion-parameter model is about 500 GB at 4-bit, 1,000 GB at 8-bit and 2,000 GB at 16-bit.
Mixture-of-experts models list two counts. Every expert has to sit in memory, so the total count sets the memory. The active count, the parameters used for each token, mostly sets the speed.
Context, users and fine-tuning
Each conversation keeps a cache that grows with its length, and each person served at once keeps their own. Long contexts and a whole team need memory well beyond the weights.
Full fine-tuning holds about 16 bytes per parameter for weights, gradients and optimizer state, before activations. One Wick Ultra fully fine-tunes models up to about 72 billion parameters; adapter methods reach much larger models.
GPU memory in each Wick
Every Wick keeps its GPU memory on the GPUs, as HBM4.
| System | GPUs | GPU memory | 4-bit weights up to | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wick | 1 NVIDIA Rubin | 288 GB | About 576 billion parameters | $199,000 |
| Wick Pro | 2 NVIDIA Rubin | 576 GB | About 1.15 trillion parameters | $339,000 |
| Wick Ultra | 4 NVIDIA Rubin | 1,152 GB | About 2.3 trillion parameters | $656,000 |
| Wick Cluster node | 8 NVIDIA Rubin | 2,304 GB | About 4.6 trillion parameters | $1,234,000 per node |
Questions
How much GPU memory does DeepSeek V4 Pro need?
About 800 GB for its weights at 4-bit, 1,600 GB at 8-bit and 3,200 GB at 16-bit. Wick Ultra's 1,152 GB holds the 4-bit weights with room for context.
How much GPU memory does Kimi K3 need?
About 1,400 GB at 4-bit for its 2.8 trillion parameters. That is more than one Wick Ultra's 1,152 GB and within one Wick Cluster node's 2,304 GB.
Can a model run from CPU memory instead?
It can load, but CPU memory is far slower than the GPU's HBM, so generation slows sharply. GPU memory is the figure to size for.
